EX-POLICE OFFICER ALLEGEDLY KILLS THREE IN YOVOYAN BADAGRY LAGOS

The Yovoyan community in Badagry, Lagos, was thrown into mourning on Tuesday following an attack that led to the deaths of three individuals. An ex-police officer, Charles Atideka, and an individual identified as Bright have been reportedly linked to the incident, which occurred in the early hours of 1st April 2025.

According to reports by News Peddlers and NAN, the victims – Muji Onilude from the neighbouring Gberefu community, as well as Richard Atideka and Latevi Atideka from Yovoyan – were allegedly shot by armed assailants at the Atideka compound.

David Atideka, who survived the attack, recounted that the incident occurred between 2am. He claimed he had stepped outside to urinate when he saw two armed men entering the compound. According to his account, the intruders asked for him before shooting his wife, Latevi Atideka. He further alleged that when he went to alert his brother, Richard, he found him already dead. David stated that he recognized one of the attackers as his brother, Charles Atideka, a retired police officer.

A source cited by NAN alleged that the attack may have been linked to a long-standing land dispute involving Charles Atideka and his family. Reports indicate that a legal case was ongoing, with a final judgment expected two days after the incident.

Meanwhile, Yusuf Onilude, the son of Muji Onilude, recounted that his father had spoken to him shortly before the attack. He stated that moments later, he heard gunshots and saw a man running away. According to him, he attempted to chase the fleeing individual, who fired warning shots before escaping.

Reacting to the incident, community representative James Yovoyan urged the police to ensure the perpetrators were brought to justice. Chief Lorence Atideka, the head of the Atideka family, also called for the arrest and prosecution of those responsible.

However, Henry Atideka, the son of Charles Atideka, denied the allegations against his father. He claimed that unknown gunmen were responsible for the attack and stated that his father was not present when the incident occurred. He also disputed the claims of a land dispute, suggesting that the family disagreements were unrelated to property and were meant to be resolved at a scheduled meeting on Thursday.

The Police have reportedly transported the victims’ bodies to the Badagry General Hospital Mortuary and launched an investigation.

Authorities are yet to provide an official update on the status of their investigation or any possible arrests.
